SILHOUETTES - In the early days of the weather vane, businesses would display their specialty using this type of vane. In both the old and new worlds, others would carve a piece of wood into a simple figure for use as a wind indicator. After 1900, the silhouette became very popular again, and often depicted animals, aircraft, fables, sporting events or humorous themes, the list is endless. Silhouettes can be simple or more complex and varied with layering and many popular artistic metalworking techniques.

SWELL-BODIED - This is the more contemporary wind vane or weathervane style and is associated with the American weather vane makers rather than the earlier European wind vane pioneers.
